September/ October Newsletter
September/October  2010

What a beautiful Fall we are having; I love waking up to see the Sun’s light reflecting pinks and oranges off of
Mt. Rainier.  I’ve got most of our gardens ready for winter and harvested the pumpkins and herbs (Valerian!).  I
even made oatmeal cookies yesterday—ate one too many though.  We are still sleeping with the window open; it’s
feels like I’m outside when I snuggle deeper into the covers.

A lot has happened since the last newsletter!
I went to Virginia to a Sweat Lodge workshop, three sweats in three
days!  It was my first visit to Virginia and it is gorgeous; the land where we stayed and the lodge sits is wild and
wonderful.  The couple that owns and care-takes the land is two talented, consciences, spirit-filled people, who live
lives of integrity (in-teg-ri-ty: N. 1. Uncompromising adherence to moral and ethical principles, 2. The state of
being whole or entire. 3. Sound or unimpaired condition).  Our teacher is one of the wisest, most humble and
honest women I have ever known.  The story starts with me, here in Washington, and not all that excited about
the long flight.  I flew out on Air Tran, which I’d never flown before.
Ya know how when you are not at your best, it seems like nobody is? Yeah, that was my flight.  Flight
attendants certainly aren’t what they used to be, nor is flying in general.  After the initial passing out of
complimentary bread (pretzels) and water (or sugar water), the attendants disappear until picking up trash or
starring down passengers who don’t comply with the seat belt light, the electronics’ rules, or those that don’t put
their seat in the upright position fast enough before landing…..  So we land and I gather my bags, depart the
plane and head for the Rental Cars.  I was pleasantly surprised to get a nice upgrade from the economy car I had
reserved.  I was to meet a woman, named Rose the next morning to carpool with to the site of the Lodge.  Have
you ever heard of a Microtel??? I hadn't, but it's a motel room about half the size (and price!) of a regular room;
it was great for a place to lay your head.  Well, we headed out the next morning; it was a beautiful day and Rose is
a delight.  The thing is this car I got doesn't shift until it sounds like the engine is going to blow! What the
heck??  I kept trying to manipulate the gear shift stick, but nothing seemed to help.  Fortunately we were on a
speedway and once we got the car going fast enough it shifted to a normal sounding hum.  Still, it was a concern a
lot of the time.  Well, it wasn't until our way back to the Microtel days later that I found out what I'd been doing.
There was a teeny tiny + and - symbol that I didn't see, on the gear shift.  Well, apparently it is a kind of
automatic-manual transmission, and although I had played with the gear shift, I hadn't pushed forward on it,
toward the + symbol.  Geez! I profusely apologized to my little rental car and thanked it for not blowing up in the
middle of nowhere; I also apologized to Rose.  Then we both laughed until we cried... is this what getting old is??
If so, it's pretty fun(ny).
The weekend itself was great; it was nice the first two days and the third got soggy, which in turn, created its
own learning opportunities.  Sacred Ceremony, regardless of what it is, is such a moving and insightful
experience.  I love being that connected to Earth and Spirit, as well as, with myself and the others that I share it
with.  What ever your beliefs and spiritual path may be, ritual and ceremony is a physical way to gain that
connection and inner-knowing; a peace of mind, body and soul.  My teacher is planning on teaching a group her
way of the Sweat Lodge, so we may bring it to others; this is my plan and hope for the near future.

Vacation in Arizona!
Finally, it was time to share a trip with Brad; I traveled so much this summer alone, that it felt strange, at first,
having someone with me.  I got over that real quick!  It was so nice to sit with Brad on the plane; someone to talk
to and lean on and share the experience with!  We flew into Tucson and rented a car to travel a big loop up
through the Apache Junction/Loop and back down to the Chiricahua National Monument, over to Bisbee, up
through Tombstone and back to Tucson; we had 7 days.  In that time we went horseback riding in the Sanoran
Desert, rented a boat on Apache Lake, visited endless museums, gift stores, historic sites, towns and God knows
what all!  We hiked about 9 miles through the Chiricahuas, which is one of the most magical places I've been, we
walked through the old movie town set where Little House on the Prairie, Bonanza and a huge portion of the old
time Westerns were filmed; that was very cool, except when some "lady" came blasting out a barn and told me I
couldn't be back there touching the horses!  I didn't flip her off, but I didn't bother to listen to her reasons why or
to her apology.  Hmm, my bad?  Not sure, I do know it triggers something in me when I'm around "wranglers"
that think they are all of that.  Actually, there were several people along the way that made me wonder why they
chose professions with the public, they clearly didn't want to be there.  We also met some incredible people; Ron
Feldman being one of them.  He owned the stables we rode with and he was a rock hound, historian, and treasure
hunter!  We talked a long time and I could have stayed the better part of the day, but vacation called and Brad
was ready to move on.  So I bought one of his books and some of his jewelry and a beautiful stone.  Arizona has a
beauty all its own, almost the opposite of Western Washington, and the warmth and open spaces are relaxing and
there's a sense of freedom that goes with that.  We had a great time running around seeing, and experiencing new
things together; the juice, for me anyway, of a relationship.
