11/11/11

Today is a day that people around the world have dubbed as a special energetic day. And, because we create that
which is around us, it is. Scientifically it may or may not be different from any other day, however we all know the
power of many people coming together with a common intention, and with that happening around the world today, I
say, why not join in and give as well as receive?
I came this morning to sit and smoke with Pipe; I smudged and sang a song, and when I asked permission to smoke,
I was told no. I was surprised; this was the first time it had ever happened. I knew I had not been fully present while
preparing and I was sent away to try again. I went upstairs to my studio and made a smoke mixture from my herbs; I
came back to sit and smudge the mix. While sitting there I became calm and thought about what it is to smoke with
Pipe and what today has to offer in the way of joining others in a prayer for peace and harmony among All Our
Relations. I was then given permission to smoke. I smoked with full intent of being with and feeling the energy being
sent out by so many. In the end, I was reminded to receive that energy with gratitude and intention. I get so caught
up in sending it out, in giving and teaching and helping, that I forget to receive; I forget how much I need to receive.
When I say I get caught up in giving, I’m not necessarily patting myself on the back. Being out of balance is being out
of balance, no matter the reason. Always wanting to give can be a game I play as a fixer, or where I get my self-
worth, or it may just be my calling. In any case, I need to balance that giving with receiving. So I sat and received
and it felt good.  And it made me want to address all of you who feel the need to always be offering your help,
wisdom, energy, money and whatever else; we are grateful to you, thank you. I ask that you take the time to look at
your motivation/intention for helping. I ask that you take a moment to see if you feel any obligation or resentment
around your helping. If we put it out there that we are helpers, givers, teachers, doers, we will be asked, by many, to
do so. Practice on only saying yes to those that you truly want to work with. I also ask that you notice how you feel
when someone offers you help, in any way; do you reject it without thinking? Perhaps you feel guilty for taking
someone’s time, energy or money? Are you putting it out there that you don’t ever need help, or that you are not
worthy of help? When we receive from others, we are also giving them the gift of giving. What if everyone rejected
our help? Yikes! So relax a bit today and know that many many people are sending love and energy out to the
world, to you.. and receive.
To those of you who choose to only receive, yes the takers, we thank you too; for without you, we would have
fewer people to help us feel needed! You are our great teachers in many ways. However, balance applies to you
too, and what a wonderful thing it is to experience making someone’s day a little brighter. It doesn’t have to be big-
not to begin with- it could be dropping a dime into a charity box, or opening a door for someone, a smile and a
compliment. Or, it could be big: take someone to an appointment, help them move, donate time to a charity, and on
and on.  I also ask that you question your reasons for always needing help. Is it habit: did someone convince you that
you were incapable: are you lazy: was it a role in life that evolved into a way of life? Ask these questions without
judgment, because there is no right or wrong, there just is what is, and is it to your greatest good? Most all of us do
our share of giving and receiving, and it never hurts to question ourselves as to why. If the habitual givers can work
on saying no to every request and yes a little more often to those who offer help, and if the habitual receivers can
begin to make strides in doing things for themselves and practice giving a little more often……. What would that
look like?
I wonder…
