More about Herbs
The Plant Kingdom is full of nourishing and healing allies.
Taking in certain herbs, on a daily basis, for periods of time can
help feed, balance, and heal. Nettle, dandelion, clover, and oat,
for example, have large amounts of vitamins and minerals that
help stabilize and enable the body's organs to operate at full
potential. These type of nourishing herbs are commonly referred
to as tonics and many also belong to the family of alternatives.
Both benefit the body as a whole; tonics work on the systems in a
general way, while alternatives work through the blood.
Other families or groups of herbs are, nervines, expectorants,
stimulants, vulneraries, astringents, demulcents, antibiotics, and
laxatives, just to name a few!
Because there are so many amazing plants, herbalism can get
very confusing. I have found the best approach is to start with
one or two herbs that call to you, or that you resonate with, and
read up on them, buy a small portion of them and use them for a
week to a month. Note any benefits you feel with their use.
My intention is to write brief articles on specific herbs to help
ease the overload of information that can be found. My first
article, Nature's Nourishment addresses the gathering, use and
benefits of nettles.
