Happy Summer!
The Summer Solstice was great; Grandfather Sun was out in all his glory for that whole evening and I got to spend it with
some amazing women (and cows) around a beautiful fire. Ahhh. Our gardens are finally kicking in- beyond the weeds- and
we are waiting for our first tastes of homegrown groceries. Actually, we did have some broccoli raub the other night in stir
fry. It’s the first time we’ve grown it and it’s good but I prefer the bigger stalks myself. Brad got our foundation stone
installed and it looks great! I participated in my first art walk, showing my paintings, handmade paper, drums and rattles. It
was freeing to just put it out there with no fear of around what anyone else thought. It seemed most folks were there for the
wine, but I did receive several positive reactions to my work and had wonderful conversations with several people. We
went to Eastern Washington for a few days and enjoyed the heat, water, hiking, golf and soaking up the sun; it was a
needed break!
Summer; the South Direction
So we have entered Summer and the sacred direction of the South. It is a time of rapid growth, growing out of the old and
into the new. Sometimes this growth isn’t much fun but on the other side of it waits greater awareness and more freedom to
be your potential Self. Enjoy this hard work by mixing it up with a lot of playing! The South also represents youthful
innocence, trust, faith and playfulness; so get out there and let your child lead the way in play! Coyote and Snake are two
of the animal guardians of the South. Oh wiley Coyote is the trickster so watch out! If you are fooling yourself into believing
a lie or denying your Truth, you can expect Coyote to trip you up and land you on your butt, laughing at you the whole
time. So join in the laughter and consider it a lesson in not taking yourself too seriously. Snake is also about growth,
shedding old skins of words, beliefs and actions that no longer serve you. Sometimes shedding that skin requires scratching
and pulling, it may be a little painful, but again the pay-offs of a well fitted and brand new skin, is worth it.
While you’re out there sitting around camp fires throw in a handful of tobacco or sage or cedar or something you find
around you, remembering to blow a breath of gratitude into it first. Just a little act of gratitude that can help you feel the
connection between yourself and nature. And watch those fires, don’t let them loose!
