January 2011

Hello Everyone and Welcome 2011!

I hope you enjoyed the holidays and you were able to spend at least
some of your time with people and events that brought you
happiness.  I look forward to a year full of possibilities, opportunities,
lessons and gifts.

We have entered into the Winter season and here in the NW, Winter
came with a cold snap.  The snow stayed around my home for a week
after the initial fall.  It was beautiful and I loved the bright blue skies
of day and the deep starry skies of night.  I did a full Moon ceremony
on December 20th and Grandmother Moon showed up in glory!  And,
other than my smashed thumb, which I did while chopping kindling,
ceremony was beautiful.  The clouds took over shortly thereafter and I
wasn’t able to watch the lunar eclipse.  I’m happy to report, after a
night of doing Reiki on my thumb, it looked much worse than it felt,
and it is healing nicely.

So, with Winter upon us we stand in the Sacred Direction of the
North.
Winter and the teachings of the North are paradoxical; on the
surface, all appears dead, but underneath, seeds and roots are
gathering the strength and nourishment it will take to come full circle
in the following year.  Animals too, are tucked away, for the most
part, sleeping, hibernating, staying warm and eating up their caches
of food.  Winter (and the North) is about Life and Death.  How in
dying, whether in physical or non-physical form, there is rebirth.  The
North is also the place of the Giveaway; this can be if you are at the
peak maturity of a goal, idea, or of age itself.  As elders, we are or will
be, responsible for giving away the wisdom we have gained
throughout Life.  We will practice giving away small pieces of ability
in preparation of the final giveaway of our physical being, at which
time rebirth will occur.  We talked about reflecting on the past year
during the Fall; now, in Winter it is time to start a list of goals for the
coming year.  What do you wish to accomplish this year?  Where do
you want to be?  Who do you want to be?  How do you plan to get
there?  The “how” question is an important one; we need a plan to
execute if we want things to happen.  Make a list, make a plan;
meditate on it so it becomes a dream, a vision.  Get those “seeds”
ready to be planted in the Spring.  While dreaming away on the
coming year, follow the lead of All Our Relations, and rest, rejuvenate
and refuel.  Walk in the rain, make snow angels, enjoy what winter
sports you choose; eat those wonderful winter stores of potatoes,
squash and canned fruits and veggies; sleep, rest, read, write, draw,
plan a garden, you get my drift.  Take wonderful care of yourself; you
are deserving!

Herbs: Timothy Lee Scott and UpS (United Plant Savers)

When designing your gardens this year, think about the possibility of
adding a medicinal herb to your list of culinary herbs.  Better yet, go
to the United Plant Savers website and choose an endangered species,
there are many.   Their website is:
www.unitedplantsavers.org and
click on their “at risk” list.  You can also become a member and
receive all kinds of great information and free roots, seeds and plant
starts.
An acquaintance of mine, Tim Scott, has written a book titled,
“Invasive Plant Medicine: the ecological benefits and healing abilities
of invasives.”   His extensive research is apparent and I enjoyed his
writing style.  The book is a comprehensive and alternative look at the
plants that have been tagged “invasive” by the powers that be.  Give
it a read and let me know what you think.   You can find the book at
www.amazon.com.

“The four basic skills that form spiritual foundations are, 1) focusing on positive
thought without judgment; (2) taking a time of silence or prayer; (3) having an
attitude of gratitude and counting our blessings; (4) recalling our energy from any
activity, thought, or feelings that feeds shadow behaviors and reinvesting our life
force in positive viewpoints.”  Jamie Sams, author of “Dancing the Dream”
